Based on his technical
ability and innovative style, Kevin Woon has become one of the most
sought after hairstylists in the industry. He collaborates with
many industry-leading fashion photographers including Irving Penn,
Patrick Demarchelier, Elfie Semotan, Luis Sanchis, Michel Comte,
Marc Baptiste, Max Vadukal, Joshua Jordan, and Peggy Sirota. His
hairstyles can be found on the covers of American Harper's Bazaar
and L'Officiel, as well as in the pages of the American and
Italian versions of Vogue, Flaunt, Dutch, British
Marie Claire, Surface, Spanish Vogue, and Detour,
among many others worldwide.
Kevin Woon has become a favorite among
some of the most creative downtown New York designers, and he is
repeatedly asked to lead the hair crews on their fashion shows.
Recently, Kevin Woon has acted as the key hairdresser for the runway
shows of designers such as Bruce, Kitty Boots, Susan Ciancielo,
Nanette Lepore, and Cake by Sara Kozlowski.
Many celebrities also regularly request
Kevin Woon's time, including Claire Danes, Diana Ross, Marc Anthony,
Julianna Marguiles, and Lisa Marie.
At the age of seventeen, Kevin Woon
moved to New York from his home town of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Initially, he used his penchant for hairstyling as a way of supplementing
his college tuition with a part-time job as a hairstylists' assistant
in Chinatown. After obtaining his license, Kevin Woon moved up to
Oribe's salon on Fifth Avenue and began training there. Kevin Woon
soon chose to bypass his college classes in order to devote all
of his time to working as a first assistant to Oribe. In 1989, he
began assisting Oribe on fashion shows in Milan, Paris, and New
York, such as Dolce & Gabbana, Alberta Ferretti, Versace, John
Paul Gaultier, Valentino, and Prada.
Kevin Woon insists that texture is the
key to great hair and that style should depend on the individual,
not necessarily current trends. Some of his most interesting creations
have been loosely based on Star Wars characters or have involved
hours worth of weaving extensions into the hair. Kevin Woon has
since worked with a countless number of legendary photographers
and has become a favorite among many new, up-and-coming, non-traditional
photographers hoping to incorporate his innovations into their pictures.
Kevin Woon is currently based in New
York. |
