Since the start of his freelance career, Robert Lyon has established himself as one of the rising stars in hairstyling. Robert has worked with various prominent publications such as Vogue, W, Allure, A4, Marie Claire and Grazia to name just a few, and has collaborated with some of the most renowned photographers of our time including Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Mark Seliger, Joshua Jordan and Miguel Reveriego.
A native of New Zealand, Robert Lyon took an interest in doing hair while watching his mother do her own hair with the experience she gained while modeling in the late 60’s in London. He recreated these looks with his own imagination on his sister’s dolls, and anyone who would sit long enough for him to experiment. Although from an extended family of viable professionals outside of the arts, Robert was greatly encouraged to pursue his creative passion. This practical experience and encouragement led him to begin hairstyling at the age of 13 after school in local hair salons. He began his apprenticeship in New Zealand, and earned a degree from a four year program at Massey University Fashion School. Upon graduating, Robert moved to New York, and spent five years assisting top hairstylists and working in top New York salons.
Robert’s break came when he met portrait photographer, Danielle Levitt, and at her insistence to work with her, Robert began his freelance career. His earlier work was for Vice Magazine, Nylon and Elle Girl. Today, Robert’s work is featured in a variety of high level publications, and advertising campaigns and his regular celebrity clients include Annabella Sciorra, Isabella Rossellini and Michelle Williams. Robert’s time is split between working with in the facet of freelance and the John Freida Salon, New York City.
