Berta Camal was born in Havana, Cuba. She began an artistic career at a young age, first by designing and painting custom t-shirts at age fifteen, then working as a professional illustrator after graduating from high school.

She was introduced to the fashion industry while working as a model, and she quickly discovered a passion (and talent) for the art of makeup application. As a makeup artist for Rolonda Watts, she met Kevyn Aucoin, a guest on the show. The two makeup artists quickly developed a rapport, and Berta began assisting him on fashion shows. After becoming one of his top assistants, she worked extensively with his celebrity clients.

Berta has since worked independently with celebrities and musicians such as Tori Amos, Nine Inch Nails, Blondie, Yasmine Bleeth, Claire Danes, Molly Ringwald, Katie Couric, Sonic Youth, Everclear, Benicio Del Toro, Michelle Williams and Donna Karan. She has worked with magazines that include Vanity Fair, SPIN, Rolling Stone, Esquire, US, In Style, Entertainment Weekly and GQ. In addition, Berta has appeared on several MTV make-over specials and acted as key makeup artist for music videos and fashion shows.

Berta Camal is based in New York.
