The following is a translated into English from the Korean Vogue. You were raiseed in the industrial North of England. Lots of wonderful fashion field people are from UK. I think there is some cultural reason. Do you think UK has something in art? Yes. There is an independence of spirit in the UK which I think is fundamental to making serious art. And do you feel something difference among NY and Paris (You live now) and UK? They are all different, they all have great elements . Paris has a sophistication and an old fashioned respect for quality of life that doesn't exist anymore in NYC and London. London still has the raw edge and NYC is just so fast that literally anything is possible there. Could you please explain about your job in 1 sentence for Vogue Korea readers. I go into a giant white room with a huge team of very talented people, (Stylists, Art Directors, Hair & Make up, models) and I have to convince each of them that we are all there to do something truly wonderous. Do you remember what you felt when you did the first work for fashion? Could you please tell us about it in detail? I remember very well because it was not so long ago. I was really thrown in at the deep end. Most of my early projects I did without any taditionall experience (I am not a trained photographer.) Also by accident I pretty much started at the top my first jobs were for V Magazine and the New York Times. So it was a very strange mix of pride, exhilaration and quite a lot of healthy fear. But I always worked incredibly hard and tried to live up to the trust people had put in me. What makes you do fashion photos? Is there some other theme that you would like to take photos? I dont really see the boundaries of what I do. I am interested in everything. I am currently working on a book of landscape photography a lot of which was shot in the very wild and remote Orkney islands. In your profile, you were doing some odd jobs in Paris. Do you mind to tell us what you did in Paris? Like a lot of people I did a lot of things to survive over the years it was pretty tough sometimes. I washed dishes, I worked in a meat factory (very bloody), I was an industrial painter in an electrical power plant (quite dangerous) and I was a professer at a University but probbaly the worst job ever was I once spent 3 whole days retouching a single chocolate biscuit for a packaging design company. We love the images that you did for the show. That is fantastic and architectural. Are you interested in Architecture? And do you have any favorite architects? Im very proud of the Modeland series and I have recieved a lot of very kind compliments. I have several close freinds that are architects and I am fascinated by the subject, but my prefernce is quite traditional , I remeber being very affected by Corbusier and Oscar Niemer. I guess I am a pure modernist. In your portrait of profile, you are with very sweet baby. How many members in your family? Could you please let us about your family? My daughter is called BRUNE she is very beautiful and clever. My partner is Corinne (who is also beautiful and clever and french) and very tollerant of me dispearing all over the world to shoot pretty girls . And in less than a month she will give birth to our son. I feel if you visit Asia, there will be lots of things to be taken photos by you. I am sure that you will get wonderful images here. Have you ever been to Asia countries? Funny you should ask, I am doing the interview from my Tokyo hotel room . My very first time in Asia. I love it. Its very exciting to be so far from home and not understand at all the langauge. Its culturally so different and it forces you to communicate a lot just with smiles and yes my camera never stops clicking. You have worked with many fashion designers like Lagerfeld, Galliano and so on. Could you please explain how it was? Do you have any special designer you would like to work with? It was amazing. The thing you realize after spending a few hours with all these people is that they are not in their position by accident. They are powerfully driven, enigmatic people its quite inspiring. I shot Marc Jacobs a few weeks ago in his Vuitton office and its a really nice aspect of the job to be able to meet these brilliant people. As regards designers for the future? Macqueen and Ghesquire would come to mind. And of course YSL would be something special. How about models? Do you think who has the possibility? Im not the best person to ask, i pretty much love all the models I work with and im not much into hype. You can find something in anybody if you look deep enough. I am sure that the shooting for fashion show and Ad are different. How do you feel? I was very lucky with the Fashion show series because V Magazine gave me complete artistic control. Ads are another level, you have to really listen to what clients are telling you, often there's a lot of people on the shoot. If you take on all that responsibilty as well delivering a powerful image; its not easy. Do you prefer to take pictures of space or models? Do you like to listen music or talk with people when you do shooting? Its usually a big team in the studio and I think the music is good for them but personally I am so phyched up when I shoot I cant hear anything and I see only the subject. Do you have favorite photographer, fashion designer, musician, artist you admire? Im very influenced by literature, I think Kazuo Ishiguro work is the most powerful of our time, Avedon, Ansel Adams and the early David Bailey are my favourite photographers. My list of artists is a bit too long but Brancusi, Uccello, Matisse are near the top. Music, Camera Obscure, Pavement, Belle and sebastian, I saw White stripes a few weeks ago probaly the best concert Ihave ever seen. They are really extraordinary. Do you like clothes for yourself? Do you like to get dressed? I find myself more and more interested. I would quite like a pair of balenciaga amoured pants. (not sure they come in big lad size though) You prefer digital work or analogue? I use anything I can and need, cameras are just tools. It's whats behind the camera that counts. Are you interested in fashion movies also? Im not sure what fashion movies are? They sound cool though. Fashion jobs are so various and technical now. Can you imagine what fashion industry will be like in 10 years? I dont think it will change so much, Historically way before digital there have always been incredibly technical shoots and really simple ones. Its always about creativity and that comes from people not technology. We will always have need for the visionary, the artist. You have any special plan in 10 years? About your work and your family? So much to do. I would like to start making films probably; also return to making sculpture aswell. As for my family I just plan to keep them happy and safe. |
